June 30, 2023, Qingdao, China. – Valery Bessel, Executive Vice President of NewTech Services, Professor of National University of Oil and Gas «Gubkin University», presented a report on "Low Carbon Energy as the Basis for Russia's Carbon Neutrality" at the Annual Conference on Low Carbon Energy and Sustainable Development held by the Association of Sino-Russian Technical Universities (ASRTU) at China Petroleum University (Qingdao).

Advanced research on environment, regional sustainable development and carbon neutral industries became the main subject of the 2023 ASRTU Conference.

The NewTech Services Vice President presented a study on the absorption capacity of biological ecosystems in Russia. The capacity of Russia's forests, wetlands, inland waters and seas to absorb carbon dioxide is assessed to range between 16 billion and 48 billion tons of carbon dioxide, which, respectively, is ~8 times the annual CO2 emissions of Russia itself and ~1.3 times the annual global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels.

It is important for Russia, in general, and oil and gas companies, in particular, to continue to address climate change issues in order to reduce emissions. It is necessary to develop methodologies and modern software products to assess the carbon footprint of goods, businesses and countries. It is necessary to develop a huge amount of fossil fuels, while developing renewable energy, which is economically feasible, especially at remote oil and gas facilities, to develop the most environmentally friendly power generation using natural gas, as well as "carbon-free" hydro and nuclear power.
