December 2020, West Siberia, Russia –  NewTech Services and Gazprom Neft have successfully completed another field run of a new 4 3/4" push-the-bit Rotary Steerable System (RSS), the Neutrino™ Ultra High-Speed MWD tool, and the MFWPR® Resistivity LWD tool in the Yuzhno-Priobskoe Field. The primary objective of the field trial was the qualification of the RSS pilot series design for commercial launch.

A new proprietary rotary steerable system was designed by Wolverine Oilfield Technologies, a subsidiary of NewTech Services Holding Limited, and was successfully field-tested in the USA. Pre-commercial field tests in December 2020 in Russia confirmed the new RSS to be simple, robust, and cost-effective. The Rotary Steerable Tool completed another successful field test by drilling the 2592 ft horizontal section.

Cooperation between NewTech Services and Gazpromneft-Khantos Engineering Teams allowed for further successful field tests in Russia. Gazpromneft-Khantos Team provided a candidate well and supported the RSS testing in the field.

The RSS was used to drill a horizontal section with a hold of 86˚- 91.5˚ degrees. The system was able to receive downlinks without failure and no need to stop drilling to change the steering vector. An average ROP of 52.5 ft/h and a maximum ROP of 75.5 ft/h were achieved while drilling.

The Neutrino™ MWD and Pressure During Drilling (PDD) sensors were successfully run in conjunction with the RSS in the trial job. The Neutrino™ MWD confirmed the RSS Near Bit Inclination measurements and provided 2 bit/sec high density, quality LWD data without any loss of signal. The RSS dynamic Near Bit Inclination measurements ensured the accurate geosteering and well placement.

The commercialization of a new 4 3/4" rotary steerable system during 2021 will permit operators to achieve the ultimate goal of complex well trajectories and well placement at optimized cost.
